Romania officially joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on 29 March 2004 and became a member of the European Union on 1 January 2007, as well as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Since joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 2004, Romania has been looking forward to playing an active role and hosted the 20th NATO Summit in April 2008. In terms of foreign policy, it consolidates bilateral relations with EU member states and the United States, attaches importance to the development of good-neighbourly and regional cooperation in South-Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region, and works with The South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) to promote structural ties between the EU and the countries of the Western Balkans.
